Clothes are something we all need but spending money on your clothing can be costly over time. Not only are you shopping for yourself, but you might be shopping for other members of the household too, which can certainly add up. With that being said, it’s important to try and understand where you can save money and cut the cost of spending if you’re on a budget.

Here are some tips to save money when shopping for clothes.

AVOID SPENDING TOO MUCH ON TREND ITEMS

Trends are great to follow and find inspiration for your wardrobe, but it’s something you shouldn’t actively be looking to buy into every time something new pops up. If you’re buying because of the trends, then you’re going to be parting with your money on a much more regular basis. This is because trends come and go as quickly as they appear for the first time.

If you want to save money and perhaps limit how much you spend on your clothing, then you want to avoid following trends and buying them. A lot of trends can tend to come back around anyway, so if you like the look of a trend, you could always wait until next time if you feel like you’ve already spent enough for the month or season.

Trends are great to get inspiration for your outfits, but they can be expensive to invest in.

HIT THE SALES

Sales items are always available in most stores, whether they’re having an end of season sale or a mid-season promotion. Sales in clothing used to be something of a rare thing, but now, you’d be hard-pressed not to find a single store that’s currently doing some form of sale. If one store hasn’t got a sale on, then you’ll certainly find another store that will. When trying to save money, it’s always a good idea to shop around the sales racks as there can certainly be some great finds here. Yes, there might be a lot of items that land in a different season to what you’re in now, but that’s not to say you can’t buy it and hold onto it until that season comes back around.

When looking in the sales racks, if you see more than one size of the item or there’s a bulk of them, chances are they didn’t sell very well when they were marked at full price. That’s not to say they won’t look good on you, but it’s worth being wary of these items, as they may be in the sale rack for a reason.

INVEST IN STATEMENT PIECES

In your wardrobe, there’s going to be items that you’ll likely spend a bit more money on than others. These should be your statement pieces, and you should have these be something that you can swap and change with other pieces of clothing. Having versatility in your statement clothing is important, especially when you spend money on them. By investing in statement pieces, you’ve likely got clothing that is going to last you for a long time, and it’s worth finding those pieces that are going to see you through all the different seasons. A trench coat, for example, is a good statement piece and is one you’re likely to wear over and over again. It’s timeless and something that has come back into fashion again and again.

Statement pieces don’t have to be substantial either as you could go for something like sunglasses or eyewear that’s made in Italy. Investing in a nice pair of sunglasses or glass frames can be great for shaping the face.

WASH YOUR CLOTHES PROPERLY

Saving money on your clothing starts with how well you look after the clothing you already own. To stop yourself from spending too much money on your clothes, make sure you’re washing your clothes properly. That means, checking the label to see what wash cycle it should be on and whether you can tumble dry it or iron it. By following the instructions on the label, you’re going to make it last a lot longer as a result. It’s also good to try and limit your washing of the garments as much as you can, opting to reuse it more than once if it’s suitable and still smells clean.

If you have any queries about how to wash your clothes, you can find a lot of information and resources online. There are certain clothes that you might want to get dry cleaned instead of washing them the normal way, especially if they’re more expensive or made out of materials that simply can’t be washing in your laundry machine.

CHECK OUT THE CHARITY AND SECOND HAND SHOPS

There’s nothing like saving money than checking out thrift shops. Thrift shopping is a great way to find some of the best deals out there when it comes to clothing. You’d be surprised what people give to local thrift shops, and if you’re shopping in the right areas, you might come away with some truly amazing bargains. Make sure that you’re ready to spend some time when going thrift shopping as there’s going to be a lot to sift through in order to get to the pieces that you want. It’s always good to go into a shop, knowing exactly what garments you’re after and that way, you’re not just aimlessly wandering from rail to rail.

LOOK FOR QUALITY

When shopping for clothes, you want to try and stay away from the really cheap stores, unless you feel like the quality in some of these places is an exception to the rule. The cheaper something is, the likely it will be that it’s going to be made out of poor-quality fabrics. It’s important that you’re finding the right balance when it comes to your clothes and looking at quality through touching the clothes you try on is important.

When you’re picking up items, feel them ensure they are well made and that they feel good when you put them on too. You don’t need to spend an absolute fortune for quality, but you definitely don’t want to be going too low when it comes to the cost of clothing. You also want to think about those who get paid to make the clothes.

HAVE A BUDGET AND STICK TO IT

Budgets are a good thing to have when you’re trying to save money on clothes shopping. It can be very easy to spend hundreds over just a store or two. If you’re looking for specific outfits, then it’s good to note that down and budget how much you want to spend on each. If you’re not sure what you want, then just set a budget for what you’d like to spend on your trip out.

If you don’t have a budget, you’ll probably be spending a little extra here and there, which can then end up adding up to a larger amount overall. Make sure that you have a budget whenever you go shopping and that way you can come away from the shopping experience with a positive mindset. We can often be hard on ourselves and ruin the experience when we overspend. It makes us feel guilty, and shopping should be a pleasant experience whenever you do it. It’s a form of self-care and to reward yourself!

Saving money on shopping for clothes is important because we can very easily spend too much. Use these tips to help save what you can but still have the ability to get some great clothes that will see you through a season or for the next year.
